"Calling Gloria: A Journey Through
25 Years 1982-2007" Web Edit
In early 2007, Other Half Entertainment began the conception
of the production of a video project to feature and celebrate the 25th
anniversary of Laura's signature song and multi-platinum international
hit, Gloria. We envisioned a full-length video special encompassing
a great number of video clips, interviews, TV and concert appearances,
etc. We brought on board long-time devoted fan Erika Atsumi Foreman to
create this special video tribute. The resultant Other Half Entertainment
50-minute feature, Calling Gloria: A Journey Through
25 Years 1982-2007,
debuted at 2007's Spirit Of Love Memorial Gathering in New York,
and was the highlight that evening of our very special celebration of
the 25th Anniversary in Laura's honor.
The full-length video, which contains various interconnected versions
of Gloria along with the other elements mentioned above, was
received with rave reviews, and was recently edited for placement on
LauraBraniganOnline.com for all to enjoy! The debut of this video
edit on LauraBraniganOnline.com comes at no better time than 25 years
later from the time Gloria was
at the top of the charts!
It was late November through mid-December of 1982, that Gloria hit the
top of the charts, with its total chart run of 9 months.
As with everything at Other Half Entertainment, we dedicate this video

"Self Control" 20th Anniversary
Besides "Gloria", the other major hit for Laura
that is most identified with her is "Self Control". The song,
a collaborative work of Giancarlo Bigazzi (who also co-wrote "Gloria"),
Raffael Riefoli, and Steve Piccolo, is written from the point of view
of a person who willingly surrenders her inhibitions and control to her
lover; as VH-1 put it, "the ultimate song of surrender."
Long a favorite of 80's radio and practically every club
in the world, "Self Control", with its strong hook and haunting
melody, garnered both intense respect, as well as a slight amount of
criticism. The video for the song, directed by William Friedkin with
a good amount of inspiration by Laura (see below), caught the attention
of the censors at then fledgling MTV. Music video had just caught on
a few years earlier, and the video's scenes of suggestive orgy activity
were considered too controversial for the relatively conservative audience
of the time. "Self Control" was reportedly the first video
to be banned from airplay on MTV.
But that didn't last long. Several years later, MTV Networks
(now owned by Viacom) launched "VH-1" as tastes in music and
morals began to change, and the "Self Control" video was pulled
from the shelf, dusted off, and given airplay on VH-1, where it still
retains a spot on the rotation.
Laura spoke with Kathy about the video for "Self
Control". If you thought that you've heard some stories about how
the video came about, click here to
read Laura's true-life story that inspired the video!
Click
below to listen to the original recording, as Laura tells LauraBraniganOnline.com
the real-life story behind the "Self Control" video.
This great Branigan classic still wows fans and newcomers
alike. It's just as timeless today as it was when first released!
