In 1986, Laura spent months in Australia shooting the film Backstage, in which she played the lead role of Kate Lawrence, an American pop singer who wanted to start a career as an actress and was cast in the lead role of an Australian theatre production. Due to ongoing production issues, the film was not released until 1988, seeing release in Australia only, and then it went straight to home video internationally. Laura also served as music consultant for Backstage.
Laura performs three songs in the film - "Helpless," "So Lost Without Your Love," and "Lonely Nights" - all of which were produced by David Kershenbaum, who also was lead producer for Laura's 1987 studio album TOUCH. Interestingly, "So Lost Without Your Love" was co-written by Michael Bolton, who wrote multiple songs that Laura recorded throughout her career, most notably her #1 Billboard Adult Contemporary hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You."
